Leaf litter or bare soil under tonogodhime?

For tonogodhime (alternating 2x2 layers on the ground), do you set the base logs on leaf litter or scrape to bare soil? I get that ground contact is part of the method, but my forest floor is basically all leaves.

I scrape the thick mat away so the ends aren’t buried. A thin layer of leaves is fine, but that wet felt layer can smother things and hold water where you don’t want it.

Same. I don’t go full “mineral soil,” but I clear a square, then put the leaves back around the outside so it’s not mud. Keeps the base stable and the ends visible.
